Sort number words and shape words
NUMBER, PLUS, MINUS, SUM, TOTAL, and EQUAL provide several ways to talk about written calculations. ANGLE, SHAPE, CIRCLE, and SQUARE invite a different set of drawings. Ask learners to decide which group a word belongs to and give a small example. FRACTION and MEASURE can lead to further questions, depending on the lesson. The sorting task is an opening conversation; it does not need to cover every mathematical meaning or force each word into a single permanent category.
Connect a spelling with a useful example
After finding a word, write or sketch something that helps explain it. CIRCLE and SQUARE can be drawn, while PLUS and MINUS can be paired with familiar symbols. Learners may notice the different spellings of SUM and a similarly sounding everyday word such as some. Read an example sentence to make the context clear. Keep explanations at the level of the current lesson, and use your teaching materials for definitions or procedures that the puzzle does not provide.
Use the grid as a discussion station
Set out the worksheet beside plain paper and invite pairs to choose three entries for an illustrated mini-glossary. One person can write a word and the other can supply an example, then they can swap roles. A completed search does not demonstrate that someone understands a calculation or a geometric idea. Ask a follow-up question about the example instead. For a shorter session, select a few familiar terms in the maker and leave out diagonal directions so that more time is available for the conversation.
Questions about this puzzle
Are there math problems to calculate on this sheet?
No. The task is to find twelve supplied math-related spellings. Add your own drawings or examples if you want to connect the vocabulary with a separate lesson.
How do I print the puzzle and its answers?
Choose US Letter or A4, then select Download PDF above. The student puzzle comes first and its matching answer key is on the second page. For browser printing, choose the same paper size and disable browser headers and footers.
Can I change the words or make a gentler version?
Yes. Enter your selection in the word search maker and choose your grid and directions. The large print maker offers larger letters with difficulty set separately.
